Though westerners pretty much have unrestricted access to visa-free travel through out most of the globe, you may be surprised to know that the United States passport is not the most valuable passport in the world.
According to Henley, though Americans can access 172 countries visa-free, European nationals still hold an advantage because they have permanent access to EU nations, while Americans and other foreigners can only stay 3 out of every 6 months.
So which nations have the most valuable passports for visa free travel?
Denmark passport holders have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 172 countries, including almost all of Europe and the Americas. Denmark passport holders also enjoy unrestricted access to Europe’s borderless Schengen area. However this arrangement was challenged in 2011 by the Danish government proposing tightening its borders to keep out “illegal immigrants and organized crime”. The EU scratched this, which the newly-elected Danish government abandoned later.
Like the Danes, Luxembourg passport holders enjoy visa-free access to 172 countries. However, Luxembourg passport holders also enjoy visa-on-arrival access to countries such as India, which the Danish passport does not allow.
According to the IMF and World Bank, by purchasing power parity, Luxembourg ranks between the 1st and the 2nd richest nation in the world.
The Luxembourgians’ low-profile has helped them build one of Europe’s most successful offshore banking centers.
3. United Kingdom
Considered one of the most valuable passports in the world, United Kingdom passports allow visa-free access to 173 countries, making the UK passport the winner between Denmark and Luxembourg.
However, the United Kingdom is not a part of Europe’s Schengen area, which means British travelers must show their passport when entering the continent. UK passport holders must also secure visa-on-arrival for several eastern European nations, a constraint not required by some of the other passports on this list.
With one of the most respected passports in the world, Swedish travelers enjoy visa-free travel options to almost anywhere in the world. However, despite having 173 countries open for visa-free travel, Swedish passport holders can not travel to India visa-free and have less visa-free options than the #1 passport does in Africa and Southeast Asia.
According to the Nomad Capitalist, Finland is “The world’s most transparent nation” and one of the “most underestimated economies”
Finland also offers the #1 most valuable passport for visa-free travel.
Breaking the three-way tie between Sweden and the United Kingdom, Finland’s passport offers more commonly used visa-free travel options, such as travel to India and Vietnam, a country traditionally more difficult to enter.
